Overview

October 2021 EGM

This was an opportunity for members to join the commitee and help run the society. At this EGM, we elected two roles.

  • Social Secretary - responsible for organising social events for members
  • Webmaster - responsible for updating the website with new content each week

A transcript of the EGM can be found here. Congratulations to Nathaniel Smith and Daniel Ledger!

Member Talks

Following the EGM, the floor opened to members of the society to give brief, 10-minute talks on areas of cyber security that interested them.

Recently beat an interesting CTF and want to show us the solution? Go for it!

Seen a news article and wanted to show us? Be our guest!

Want to discuss something we don't have a session planned for? Absolutely!

It is common in the industry - especially in consultancy - to talk about your research work or findings of a penetration test. If you're not confident with public speaking, this is a great opportunity to practice your skills! Those who take part will recieve a flag worth 15 points on our flag tracker.

The talks can be found here. Below is the full list of talks:

  • InsertCheerios: "Don't Write Your Own Cryptography Code"
  • harris01: "Outsmarting Artificial Intelligence"
  • spint: "Domain Admin in 15 Minutes"
  • fuzzypickles: “Beginner Electronics for Hardware Hacking”
  • JungleeZayn: "The Handshake Network"

EGM Results

Below are the results for the October EGM, including the candidate manifestos and the number of votes for each candidate. There was a total of 32 votes from SUCSS members.

Social Secretary

Nathaniel Smith (elected after receiving 28 votes):

  • Host regular and diverse socials with respect to the average interests of members.
  • Host socials of different magnitudes and frequencies to maintain a unique feeling (e.g. pub social biweekly, laser tag bimonthly).
  • Ensure socials happen in a safe and comfortable manner (no more suspicious half finished pints from strangers ;-;).
  • Maintain communication with all members and ensure everyone is aware of upcoming events with plenty of notice.
  • add the tunnel society to SUSU by force.

4 votes to re-open nominations (RON).

Webmaster

Daniel Ledger (elected after receiving 14 votes):

What I can do:

  • Knowledge of docker, SQL, Nginx, Python, Node, HTML and a lot of other similar technologies.
  • Open to learning new ones should the need arise.
  • I already have a prior knowledge of cyber security.

What I want to do:

  • Maintain the existing sites (obviously).
  • Fix a few annoying things (like the lack of HTTPS).
  • Help with anything else I get yelled at to do.

Chris Taperell (received 13 votes):

As someone with experience in and around cybersecurity in both a CTF and professional environment, I have experience in the function of web services. The specific role of webmaster is one in which I currently lack experience and would be very eager to fill and learn more about.

Dan Beynon (received 4 votes):

About me:

  • Has no prior knowledge
  • What even is a website?
  • Better than R.O.N. (I think)

If elected I promise to:

  • Be better than nothing
  • Be very open to feedback about the way the site is ran
  • Update the site/twitter frequently
  • Learn what a website is
  • Be cool

1 vote to re-open nominations (RON).
